How do I convert JPEG to SVG without losing image quality?

For lossless targets (PNG, TIFF, BMP) every pixel is preserved bit-for-bit; for lossy targets (JPG, WebP) you can tune the quality factor (default 90) before download. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header. An SVG stores shapes as mathematical paths and text as text, not as pixels, so it is a document rather than a raster grid.
Can a JPEG photo really be converted into a clean SVG?

Only up to a point, and it is worth setting expectations first. Tracing turns pixel regions into paths, which works well for logos, line art and flat-colour graphics with clear boundaries. A photograph has no such boundaries, so the trace yields either a crude posterised approximation or an SVG with tens of thousands of paths that is larger and slower to render than the original. SVG cannot represent a photograph — tracing one produces either a crude approximation or a file larger than the original raster.
Can I get transparency once the image is SVG?

The SVG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPEG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel SVG provides has something to store. SVG renders perfectly at any size, stays editable, is searchable and diffable as plain text, and is usually a fraction of the size of an equivalent PNG.
Does converting JPEG to SVG restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPEG are ordinary pixel data now, and SVG preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to SVG?

It is converted to sRGB, because SVG has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPEG rather than the SVG.
Does the SVG keep the EXIF data from my JPEG?

By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
How does text inside the SVG behave?

In an SVG, text is real text — selectable, searchable and re-styleable, and it needs the font to be available or embedded to render as intended. Converting away from SVG turns that text into pixels or into document text depending on the target; converting towards SVG only produces real text if the source had a text layer to begin with.
Does JPEG to SVG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when SVG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of SVG. SVG is the W3C’s XML-based vector format, a recommendation since 2001 and now native to every browser.
Will my colour profile (sRGB / Adobe RGB / CMYK) survive JPEG to SVG?

Embedded ICC colour profiles are read from the source JPEG and re-attached to the SVG output where the format supports it (JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP). Formats without profile support fall back to sRGB with a soft-proof step.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting JPEG to SVG?
